Apple Tree: Important Tasks at Petal Fall Stage


 

In my previous post we have been talking about Role of Pollinators in Pollination. Similarly petal fall stage is very important as this will make a base for quality fruit production

At the petal fall stage in apples, several important tasks need to be carried out to support fruit development, protect against pests and diseases, and promote overall tree health. Here’s a breakdown:

🌸 1. Nutrient Management

  • Apply Nitrogen (N): Moderate amounts for healthy growth, avoid excess Nitrogen application to prevent poor fruit set.
  • Calcium Sprays: Start foliar sprays of calcium nitrate or calcium chloride to improve fruit firmness and prevent disorders like bitter pit.
  • Micronutrients: Apply boron, zinc, and other essential micronutrients as needed, especially if deficiencies are noted.

🦟 2. Pest and Disease Control

  • Insecticides: Apply sprays to manage pests like archips, fruit borers, aphids, and mites.
  • Fungicides: Control diseases such as apple scab, powdery mildew, Core rot. Use appropriate fungicides based on regional guidelines.

✂️ 3. Thinning

  • Start chemical thinning if required to reduce fruit load and improve fruit size and quality. This is often done shortly after petal fall.

💧 4. Irrigation Management

  • Ensure and maintain adequate soil moisture through proper irrigation, especially if rainfall is insufficient.

📅 5. Weed Control

  • Apply herbicides or mechanically remove weeds to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

Apple Tree: Important Operations at Pink Bud Stage

Critical Stages for Apple Spray Schedule


The Pink Bud Stage in apple trees is a growth stage that occurs just before the flowers fully open. At this stage, the flower buds are swollen, and you can clearly see the pink or red petals through the tips of the buds, but the flowers haven't opened yet.

Why Pink Bud Stage is Important?

  1. Pest and Disease Control:
    • Many pests and diseases are active around this stage (e.g., aphids, scab, Marssonina, Powdery Mildew).
    • It's a critical time for applying fungicides and insecticides to protect the developing flowers.
  2. Nutrient Management:
    • Applying foliar nutrients like calcium, boron, or zinc can improve fruit set and quality.
  3. Frost Sensitivity:
    • Buds at this stage are sensitive to frost damage, so frost protection may be needed.

The pink bud stage is crucial for ensuring healthy blossoms and good fruit set, so proper management at this time can make a big difference in your apple harvest.

At this stage focus on these tasks:

🌸 Care and Maintenance

  • Watering: Make sure the soil has enough moisture but avoid overwatering.
  • Frost Protection: Use sprinklers, smoke at night, or wind machines if frost is expected.

🌿 Pest and Disease Control

  • Fungicides: Spray to prevent diseases like apple scab, powdery mildew.
  • Insecticides: Use if pests like aphids, mites, or leafrollers are present. Avoid harming bees.
  • Monitoring: Check for pests like thrips, archips (caterpillars) and aphids to plan future sprays.

🌱 Nutrition

  • Foliar Feeding: Spray nutrients like calcium, boron, or zinc, if needed i.e. if soil test reports indicate deficiency of these nutrients.

Apple Tree Diseases: Apple Scab Description

This post is a result of the comments received from Dr Kishore Khosla (Principal Scientist), my senior colleague from RHRTS, Kullu as I didn't cover this disease in blog and is one of the most important disease in the economy of apple. I am thankful to Dr Khosla for such a contribution and hope to receive corrections in future as well. His valuable suggestions will help me to write for the farmers of the state.

Though we were discussing about virus and viroid diseases in my previous post and we will be continuing on the topic again after completing series on this disease.

Description: Scab may occur on leaves, fruit, petioles, and green twigs.  Infections of the leaves and fruit are most common and obvious. Early season infections usually occur on the underside of the blossom cluster leaves because these are the first tissue surfaces to emerge from buds in the spring. Once the cluster leaves have unfolded and terminal leaves begin to develop, infections become evident on the upper surface of the leaves. Individual infections appear as rough, circular, and brown to dark olive-green spots (lesions), which often appear slightly fuzzy or velvety in texture. Lesions along the veins or margins often cause affected areas to distort or crinkle. Primary (ascospore) infections are usually limited to one or two distinct spots per leaf, whereas secondary (conidia) infections are often much more numerous. Secondary infections occasionally are so numerous that the entire surface of the leaf appears covered with scab, a condition commonly referred to as sheet scab.


Lesions on young fruits initially resemble those on leaves but turn dark brown to black and become corky or scab-like with time. Cells near lesions on young fruit may be killed, causing these regions to become deformed or cracked as they fail to grow and expand along with the remainder of the apple. Primary infections are usually limited to one or two distinct spots per fruit, often near the blossom end because it is upturned during the early stages of fruit development. Secondary infections are more frequent and numerous and the spots may be clumped or grown together, particularly if the fruit is directly beneath a concentrated source of secondary spores such as an infected leaf.  Secondary infections that occur in late summer or early fall are often numerous and relatively small in size, a symptom referred to as pinpoint scab.  Infections that occur just before harvest may be symptom-less at picking yet develop into storage scab lesions after harvest.
